I found Bridget Lockley through an artist group chat on IG! I always love connecting with new artists and offering an article. Lockley's sound captivated me immediately because her style reminded me of a late 90s/early 2000s British punk band that was circulating heavily on MySpace.
Bridget Lockley, being Australian, has a refreshing accent on the record. I think that helps separate her as an artist, and she leans into her authenticity. Vocally really strong, its the type of song you gotta see live at a punk show too.
Looking at the song credits, it's impressive how much of the song Bridget produced herself, with assistance from Dale Lockley as well! I love when artists can undergo the whole process themselves, always respectable. These two make for a good record. A quick note on the mix; so much modern music over values the vocal chain sitting on top of the instrumentation. It feels like Bridget Lockley went a different route to stay truer to classic punk rock mixes and that's where the vocals sit comfortably within the instrumentation around them, my best example of this is to listen to some Smashing Pumpkins (not punk but a good example for vocal mixing). Then listen to Bridget Lockley’s Mistake; the vocal mixes are perfect for the respective genres because they sit in the middle of the mix rather than on top of the instruments. Every music listener can appreciate that distinction.
Lyrically I enjoy how she’s describing that this guy will be her “one and only mistake”. She’ll “choose a new dude to be the one who got away”. The hook is dope to me for kind of describing this sort of nihilistic dating cycle, thus is punk. Her Spotify bio says her debut album is about messy relationships and making mistakes that she’ll always regret. From that description her debut will make for a powerful project.
“Its great that you’re, good in the bed, but you’re still, FUCKED IN THE HEAD!” a line in the song that will shock you while also making you chuckle, the mix is very clean on that shout sing part as well. The guitar solo that comes after that section of the song is quite palatable for any rock head. A nice low grungy dusty electric guitar timber.

Bridget Lockley’s "Mistake” is a super strong single from "Mixed Signals" her debut album, dropping on July 14! Keep up below to hear the full project when it drops.
