OG Denzo’s interpretation of melody on hip hop records continues to surprise and inspire fans of hip hop. His style and genre expression is cutting edge; reminiscent of new wave crooners certainly, but the way OG Denzo sings is better, more palatable, his voice is classic, somber, melancholic, raw, and viscerally real.
OG Denzo has overcome much loss and that’s evident with the pain in his voice, every track you can feel the tragedies that OG Denzo has experienced and lived through. He weaves these narratives into his records effortlessly sharing his story with the world in a way that every musician hopes their expression translates and transcends.
OG Denzo’s recurring themes of fatherhood, brotherhood, escaping the street life, escapism, maintaining your sanity in a cut throat industry, redemption, self improvement, regret, optimism towards the future, and more are everywhere in this project! In only 10 minutes OG Denzo will have you singing, crooning, reminiscing of crazier times, and being thankful that you’re not as wild as you once were, no matter the capacity, I feel we all come from more turbulent times and places.
Lines that really stood out to me are as follows: In the the song “Voids” OG Denzo sings; “Before I was trapping out the iphone, i was, trapping off the droid, when you gotta keep the lights on, you don’t really have a choice” this line is quite brilliant to me in that it paints this timeless somewhat dark picture that no matter the time or circumstance one is still going to have to hustle, grind, and work HARD. And that its all just in order to stay afloat and keep their head above water. Hearing this line is almost heart piercing and gut punching, OG Denzo’s way with words will have you feeling introspective and seeking redemption.
“I told my kids they gotta get their education, don’t be like your daddy all that time I gave the streets I really wasted” OG Denzo sing raps in “No Expirations”; again this theme of redemption, fatherhood, and self improvement cut through, when OG Denzo sings you listen, and when you listen his lyrics make you think. The best kind of artist, both feeling and thinking.
The piano melody in the ending record, “Flying Angels” will have you daydreaming of times you miss and pondering bittersweet and tragic memories, “I got angels flying through the sky, I know they grinding too, got sick and tired of shedding tears now I no longer cry for you.” this line and a lot of this song center around the theme of losing so many loved ones growing up in the streets that the toll taken has become somewhat numbing. And even though OG Denzo always recognizes and remembers his angels (fallen and passed on loved ones) he can no longer spend his life in deep mourning because the pain will always be there, at least lingering.
The messages behind this record are complex, cut deeply, and you might not understand the weight of this EP if you yourself haven’t experienced much loss. OG Denzo is a poet, artist, rapper, singer, and more! He leaves everything on wax in, “Stop Me When I’m Lying”
