Kid Coffin's "Rocko"; Boxing Bars for the Underground Hip Hop Head

As an exercise in artist discovery and giving back to my artist community; I decided to go though my Spotify profile to look at the other artists that my fans [Also Like]. One of these artists that immediately stood out due to the catalog and monthly listeners was Kid Coffin. I decided to go search up his most recent release. I was pleasantly and insanely surprised. It never ceases to baffle me how so much amazing art and music remains obscure when the quality could topple regimes. Hyperbolic but I do mean that.

Kid Coffin, signed to Ibex Music Group, reminds me of a sicker more vocally aggressive version of Yelo Hill, Vinnie Paz, or even Brotha Lynch Hung. His name is fitting because the way he attacks the beat could leave the instrumental in the coffin, aggressive and intimidating. The bars and metaphors are brutal and his gravelly voice makes you feel the rugged authenticity. When he raps it sounds like someone you do not want to battle with, whether that's on the mic, or in the ring.

"Rocko" is a record to workout, box, or ride to. The aggression alone gets the heart racing and the adrenaline pumping. Notable lines that stand are as follows…

“Tetanus shots, bacteria your open wounds, listen to the piano, the reaper is coming soon.” Slick grim reaper death metaphor relating to the darkness of the piano melody.

“20 rings and not a one can detect my mood, crude like a falling angel wailing in the devils tomb” Love the connection being drawn here between a mood ring, and falling from grace as Lucifer.

“Put you down for a pack of camels, fuck a sample, Sam pulled the ring from your flannel, the heart pump harder than a toilet roll handle and put you on your ass little puck mind your manners” After chopping it up with Kid Coffin he explained that this line is a Lord of the Rings reference. A rapper referencing one of the greatest pieces of literature of all time? Yes, absolutely.

Kid Coffin makes a lot of references to rugged aspects of life, the track is definitely replayable, deserving your attention to detail to pick apart all the metaphor and layered meanings. Kid Coffin is an artist I’ll be paying attention to.

The song is available to stream below and Kid Coffin is dropping a music video to Rocko on Friday June 26th.
