An artist I recently connected with on IG sent me this new record he dropped which has his own interpolation of the famous Ann Peebles sample flipped in Missy Elliot’s Supa Dupa Fly. Rocky2Grimey brings his own flavor to this classic melody.
What's crazy about his choice to rap over this beat is that I had to do a deep dive for the version of “I can’t stand the rain.” and let me tell you, there're MANY versions that utilize this sample or interpolation. Props to Rocky2Grimey for using his own voice to sing this classic phrasing. Highly recommend spinning Ann Peeble's version, than Missy's version, and finally Rocky2Grimey's to get the full context of the homage that he's paying.
Grimey begins the record reminiscing about how he came up on Missy Elliot’s iconic music and was inspired by her; fitting for him to drop his own version many years later, I love that type of passion to the art and craft.
Later in the record he drops a line about being a titan ever since he was a teen, and listening to the Blueprint everyday at age 10 (memorizing a Jay Z album) but the double entendre of figuring out your path in life is mad relatable. Also loved Teen Titans, what a great show.
Rocky2Grimey mentions he’s been a veteran in the game saying “A veteran y’all ain’t fucking with my old shit, in ‘26 they can’t beat the me from 06” highlighting 2 decades of dedication to his artistry. I enjoy hearing lines that give insight into an artist’s history and background.
“Me and Thanos hit the fusion like its GoTenks” this line is dope for the Marvel and DBZ connections. If a rapper were to fuse with Thanos, im sure they’d be a match even for a hybrid like GoTenks. The rap artist IAmThanos is also a regular collaborator of Rocky2Grimey, they have a duo called SuperVillainz, which makes this a layered double entendre!
“I sit my ass on the beat and then take a shit” I started laughing out loud at work while writing this article and hearing that line. Serious rap that can also make you chuckle with some comedic relief will forever be goated. Think Ice Cube or TI when it comes to bars that can still be funny within the context of a more serious record.
Rocky2Grimey gives a well sung interpolation to Missy Elliot’s Ann Peebles flip and makes it entirely his own, adding strong bars and lyrics to the equation, and now you have a solid freestyle entry to his catalog while also paying homage to some legendary women in the game. Commendable all around.
Go stream Rocky2Grimey and follow him on IG to keep up with all of his releases!
